Our Tie Dyes

Tie dye, a vibrant emblem of the 1960s and 70s hippie movement, transformed ordinary fabric into a bold statement of counter-culture through the use of brilliant hues on twisted and tied textiles.

Today, two primary methods define the art of tie dyeing: the classic liquid dye technique and the mesmerizing ice dye method.

Liquid tie dyeing involves dissolving dye powders in water and meticulously applying the colorful solutions directly to specific areas of the fabric. This precise approach yields bold, static blocks of color, leaving little room for error.

In contrast, ice dyeing embraces serendipity. Dye powder is sprinkled onto the fabric, either strategically or in layers, and then blanketed with ice. As the ice melts, it orchestrates a fluid movement of color, creating captivating splits and an overall sense of dynamic energy in the final design. Ice dyeing thrives on delightful surprises.

Regardless of the chosen method, both paths demand dedication and effort. Fabrics undergo a preparatory ritual of washing, drying, and sometimes soaking in an alkaline solution. Intricate patterns are painstakingly tied, often requiring multiple iterations to achieve flawless pleats and bands. Dyes must be carefully mixed for the liquid technique, while the ice in the alternative method patiently melts, guiding the pigments. The fabric then “batches,” allowing the dye to deeply penetrate and set. An extended rinsing process follows, ensuring the colors remain vibrant and bleed-resistant. Finally, each piece is dried and lovingly hand-ironed, culminating in the magical metamorphosis of a plain white cloth into a unique work of art.
